The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County will waive dog adoption fees from May 21 to May 25 to alleviate overcrowding as renovations limit kennel space. Fourteen kennels are temporarily closed, and the shelter has taken in over 300 dogs since May 1, including 101 in the past week. The fee-waived event coincides with Memorial Day weekend, offering families extra time to welcome new pets. Marketing director Lauren Green emphasized, "By adopting, individuals and families not only change a dog’s life, but also support animal welfare in our community." Renovations, partially funded by the ASPCA and a local donor, include upgrades aimed at improving the living conditions for dogs. The shelter currently cares for over 135 dogs, with 55 available for adoption and more becoming available as they are assessed. The promotion aims to encourage adoptions and create space for incoming animals in need. For more information, potential adopters can visit the Humane Society’s website.
