Direct air links between Lae, Papua New Guinea, and Cairns are on the horizon following the upgrade of Nadzab Tomodachi International Airport, which now boasts international capabilities. Cairns Mayor Amy Eden highlighted this potential during her visit to Lae, where she celebrated Papua New Guinea’s 50th independence anniversary. She participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for the Lae Market Redevelopment, a $60 million project aimed at enhancing Lae's economic stature. Discussions during her visit included a partnership between the Cairns and Lae Botanic Gardens, potentially creating a mini-PNG Friendship Garden in Cairns. Eden recognized Sim Hayward for nearly four decades of service in fostering international relations between the two cities. The delegation engaged with local leaders to enhance pathways for trade and cultural exchanges. A business delegation from Cairns will visit Lae shortly to build on the momentum from Eden's trip. This visit aligns with invitations from PNG’s deputy prime minister to develop youth and cultural exchanges.
